Sport teams from the Rice University, competes in NCAA Division I. This university is a part of Conference USA. Before joining to Conference USA, Rice University was a member of the Western Athletic Conference. In 2003, the Rice baseball team won the College World Series. They beat Stanford. This made Rice University the smallest school that won championship in last 51 years! Since 2000, this team has won 14 consecutive championships in 3 conferences! In 2006 and 2007, they finished third in College World Series tournaments.
The football team qualified in 2006 for the bowl game. This was their first qualification since 1961! On December 2006, they played in New Orleans, Louisiana against on the New Orleans Bowl. The match was against the Sun Belt Conference champion, Troy. Rice Owls lost! The Rice football team, won a match against Western Michigan University in the Texas Bowl, in 2008. This was their first bowl victory in last 45 years.
The basketball team is more successful. They won 10 titles in the Southwest Conference (1918, 1935, 1940, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945, 1949, 1954 and 1970). In 2007 a guard Morris Almond was drafted in the NBA by Utah Jazz. After season 2008, Rice fired Willis Wilson due to poor results. Ben Braun was named as head coach.
Women’s teams are also successful. In 2004-2005 basketball, soccer and volleyball teams participated in NCAA tournaments. In the next season (2005-2006) the women’s basketball, tennis and soccer teams advanced. That season 5 individuals were competing in track and field. The first conference championship that Rice women’s teams won, was in 2011 by the Women’s Swim team.
