In the United States, College basketball is a competitive game that is played between the students from different colleges and universities. The history of basketball can be traced back to Massachusetts in 1891. It was created as a part of physical education so as to keep athletes in shape and prevent them from getting hurt. Today, college basketball is governed by different collegiate athletic bodies including the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, National Collegiate Athletic Association and many more to mention. Each of these organizations is sub-divided into various divisions based on the numbers of levels of scholarships to be provided to the players.
The original rules for basketball were very different from the modern rules of the game. Initially, there were 13 players each side, but now there are 9 players on each team. The first known college to field a team against any outside opponent was Vanderbilt University and it played against Nashville YMCA. The organizations hold conferences and meeting for the annual college basketball game. Players are selected every year from different colleges and the tournament is held with great zeal.
The American Basketball Association also employs players that are successful in the college level games. Even players who had not yet graduated from college are also often selected. These players are given appropriate training and grooming so that they can play in the state and the national level at a later stage. Hence, it can be said that the associations are doing a lot to promote the sport in the college.
