FORMER TENNESSE TITAN TIM SHAW RAISING AWARENESS ON ALS

“As men we all know we are going to die but someone telling you it will be soon is frustrating,” Tim told Fox news. “It was the hardest thing I had to hear,” he said.

He was diagnosed with the disease in his late 20s and according to Tim, the day he realized that he had ALS explained why he was continuously feeling weak.

He told Fox that there are some changes which he had started noticing on his body, for instance, his muscles were deteriorating, his hands were weak and it’s a daily struggle using his hands. In addition to that his ego was also affected in some way by the disease.

After being diagnosed with the disease, the Titans had an Ice Bucket Challenge where they poured ice cold water on themselves. The challenge was initiated so as to raise funds, as well as raise awareness of ALS.

In a statement that they released, the ALS Association said that it had received $15.6 million in donation between July 29 and August 18 from people who took videos of themselves getting doused with a bucket of cold water.

According to the ALS Association, the progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to death. When the motor neurons die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), sometimes known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects people aged 40-75 years.

The cause of ALS is not known.

Tim is focusing on ALS awareness and they are planning to make the month of May be ALS awareness month.
